Cultivating Futures: Empowering our Community

CAST’s Education & Outreach priority fosters economic independence and improves family well-being through a series of diverse initiatives.  Programs include early literacy, afterschool and summer programs engaging over 1,100 underserved children, the North Fork Culinary Program workforce development, a robust Arts & Culture program enriching the lives of 2,600 community members annually, and much more.

North Fork ParentChild+ Program (NFPC+)

A home-visiting, early literacy/parent support program that helps prepare young children for school success. This free program is open to local families that have children between the ages of 18 months and 4 years and are eligible for public assistance or the free and reduced-price meal program. The NFPC+ Program currently serves 40 low-income at-risk children.

Adult Education

CAST offers English as a New Language (ENL), Intro to Computer Literacy, and citizenship classes for clients looking to improve their personal skill sets. CAST has also expanded our “Basic English for Employability & the Workplace” program to Shelter Island, ensuring equitable access to educational resources within the community.

North Fork Culinary Program

A 12-week workforce development course for high school students (not yet college-bound) and adults seeking work in the restaurant or hospitality industry.  We partner with local restaurants, hotels, and hospitality businesses engaging their chefs as instructors resulting in internships and jobs for the graduates.  To date, we have had 93 graduates.

Engage, Educate & Empower Workshops

CAST’s partners present monthly workshops on job readiness, budgeting, personal finance, entrepreneurship, domestic violence support, women’s & pediatric health, nutrition and healthy eating, planting and garden care, canning and preserving, and more.

Grupo de Madres

A Spanish-speaking mothers’ group for engaging connections and support, with a special focus on cultural exchange and the arts. This social group connects  mothers of different races, ethnicities and socio-economic statuses enabling them to share experiences and find support in a welcoming environment. Grupo de Madres and the Southold Mothers’ Club often collaborate on various events.  We currently have 24 Spanish speaking mothers and 40 children participating in Grupo de Madres.

Summer Rise

A full-day, six-week summer program for low-income, at-risk elementary school students. Our balanced curriculum focuses on enhancing academics, language development, and mental/physical wellness while providing enriching experiences in the arts, technology, gardening, outdoor activities, and more.

Steps to Success

Afterschool program providing vital homework help and academic support, a healthy snack, and a safe place afterschool for young children from low-income families while their parents/guardians are working.

Arts & Culture Program

Funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, CAST offers imaginative and inclusive programming that unites the community. We’re uniquely positioned to bring diverse audiences together, providing opportunities to the underserved and breaking down cultural barriers. 2,610 community members participated in Arts & Culture programs in the last year.

Community Garden

Our Community Garden, designed and installed by Yard Crop, aims to connect volunteers and vulnerable community members with each other and the natural world as their true source of food, while providing educational opportunities for youth and adults.

The Native Plant Garden, planted in cooperation with the Peconic Estuary Partnership to restore and protect Long Island’s Peconic Bay, enhances CAST’s educational programs for all ages.
